What to pack for you Audition

Preparing for a college singing audition can be nerve-wracking, but several items can help you feel more confident and prepared on the day of the audition. Here are some things to consider bringing with you:

1. Sheet music: Be sure to bring a few copies of your sheet music, even if you have already submitted it ahead of time. This will ensure you have a backup in case of technical issues or if the accompanist prefers a different version. You can view how I set up an accompanist binder in this article (Insert article).

2. Accompaniment track: Most in-person auditions will provide an accompanist for you, but it is always good to go over your pieces with accompaniment in the practice room prior to your audition. So ensure you have the track saved on a fully charged device and ready to go. If you do not have an accompaniment track of your music, you can always look on Youtube or Appcompanist. Hopefully, you have practiced with accompaniment prior to arriving at your audition.

3. Water bottle: Staying hydrated is essential for vocal health, so bring a water bottle to the audition. Avoid drinking anything too hot or cold and anything with caffeine or carbonation, as this can shock your vocal cords.

4. Snacks: It's a good idea to bring snacks to keep your energy levels up. Choose something easy to eat, like apple slices, almonds or crackers.

5. Breath mints or toothbrush: Breath mints or brushing your teeth can help freshen your breath before the audition, but be careful not to overdo it, as this can dry out your mouth and throat.

6. Comfortable clothes and shoes: Wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident and allows for a full range of motion. Choose shoes that are easy to walk and stand in for long periods. Also, if you are wearing heels or dress shoes, bring a change of shoes for the sake of your feet. My go-to is a pair of low-top Converse.

7. Resume and headshot: Even if you already submitted these documents with your application, you should bring a few physical copies with the materials stapled together. Especially if you have participated in more recent performances than what’s on your resume.
